Portland Adventure

Sorry it has taken me so long to post. I probably lost the two people that check here. I was going to write a complete review of my trip to Portland but the way my life is right now it would take another three months. So here are some highlights in no particular order.

-The Ace Hotel was brilliant, a very comfy feel with all the nesesscities. The fresh sheet in your room for Clover service was a highlight. The communal space on floor one and a half gave the hotel that friendly hostel like atmosphere.

-Walking down the stairs from my room and hearing the sounds of stem perging and grinders dosing, I was in heaven. Stumptown at The Ace had a great setup with a very european bar style, two Mistral and of course four Clovers. I had some great coffees off of the Clover and a few interesting talks with the baristas on the bar.

-We did a tour of all the Stumptown locations and were impressed each time. We tried to make it to as many other cafes as possible. The amount of quality driven cafes was an eye opener and just showed were the indistry can go in our city with the right amount of passion.

-A trip out to Albina Press was a must and was lucky enough to catch Billy Wilson on the bar. He was more than accomidating pulling me the "shot of the trip" and handling my bombarding of questions. The Cafe was my style, very home like, you could feel the community was a big part of the atmosphere.

-Stumptown Annex, well what can I say, a room dedicated to single origin coffee public cuppings twice a day with a coffee menu thats making my mouth water just thinking about it. The staff was very knowledgeable and more than willing to assist anyone.

-Stephen, Stumptowns head trainer, was gracious enough to give us a tour of there roasting facility. A first class establishment with there 60kg Probat built in the early 60s and the training room right off there roasting space it was a great experience. Joel one of there roasters was there giving Irene some advice on taking good photos of the roaster in action .

All in all it was an amazing trip and I could just keep going on about all that i enjoyed Powells books, Lucys Table, The Farm ect. Portland rules and I will be back.

Jam and Coffee Sandwich Please

The first ever barista jam at Discovery Coffee, and in Victoria, was a great success. We were very pleased at the turn out of local baristas and coffeephiles a like. Thanks to all who attended. A big thanks to Jason who brought out his baby Diedrich and his Sylvia as well as a home roast of his espresso. We opened up the Synesso and exposed it's guts for all to see. It was a free-for-all to pull shots, try out the Clover and in the end a very fun latte art competition erupted. There were those who came to drink coffee and those who took the indulgence a tiny step further. All said it turned into a wee bit of party but a fairly casual affair. Mainly a chance for everyone to hang out and discuss technique and coffee gossip. The next one will be more structured and focus on one or two of the fascinating and multiple faces of the coffee bean.
On the roast today we have MAO Harar and Yirgacheffe as well as a Mexican Chiapas. There is a wee bit of Sumatran in the house as well as our usual Darkside Blend. And much to our delight, the sun is shining and Aretha is belting it out on the stereo. So those in Vic, swing on by. We like seeing your smiling faces.
